We stand in solidarity with our Black colleagues, patients, friends, family, and community and say Black Lives Matter. UASOM’s Student Senate’s statement explicitly states our commitment and action plans for our fight for social justice.

This document was created by UASOM students to disseminate information about anti-racism and racial justice educational resources, protesting + safety tips, and ways to get involved. The goal is to facilitate growth & understanding of anti-racist work and allyship.

On June 9th, student representatives provided recommendations to the Medical Education Committee (MEC) to address racism and inequity in the school.

#WhiteCoatsforBlackLives

UAB School of Medicine students and physicians gathered on the Campus Green on Friday, June 5th. We stood with colleagues across the country in solidarity and commitment to improve the health and safety of the black community.

Mind the Gap

SNMA members Michael Liptrot & Allison Stephens hosted a discussion series inspired by Malone Mukwende titled ‘Mind the Gap.’

The first part of the series celebrated the 100th birthday of Henrietta Lacks and discussed the historical relationship of race and medicine with guest speaker Dr. Carlton Young (UABSOM Assistant Dean, Medical Student Diversity & Inclusion). The second part of the series focused on Race in Medical Education with guest speakers Malone Mukwende (St. George’s, University of London School of Medicine, Author of Mind the Gap) and Dr. Tiffany Mayo (UABSOM Associate Professor, Dermatology).
